Why are Sri Lankans migrating? The impact of HRM

Migration of Sri Lankans is influenced by various push-and-pull factors that impact both individuals and the labor market. A primary reason for migration is the pursuit of better economic opportunities and higher standards of living. Many Sri Lankans seek jobs abroad that offer competitive salaries, professional growth, and improved quality of life, which may be lacking in their home country due to economic instability and limited job prospects. This economic migration is particularly prevalent among skilled professionals and educated youth who face underemployment or unemployment in Sri Lanka.

Another significant factor is the desire for career advancement and skills development. Professionals often migrate to countries with better infrastructure, technology, and opportunities for training and development. These environments allow individuals to advance in their careers more effectively than they might be able to in Sri Lanka, where resources for continuous professional development can be limited.

Political and social factors also contribute to migration. Periods of political instability, perceived lack of good governance, or concerns over personal safety and rights can drive individuals to seek stability and security in other countries. This is especially relevant for young and talented individuals who may feel disillusioned with the local socio-political climate and seek environments where meritocracy, transparency, and career satisfaction are prioritized.

The outflow of skilled labor creates a "brain drain" effect, which poses challenges for local businesses and the economy. Organizations struggle to retain talented employees who are drawn to international markets that promise better pay, benefits, and career growth. To address this, HR leaders need to implement strategies that enhance job satisfaction, provide competitive compensation, and create clear pathways for career development. Additionally, fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace culture can help retain talent by making employees feel valued and invested in their home country's future.

Organizations should focus on below keys.

  • Create a better working environment

By creating a better working environment system can help employees stay in the company like annual trips, inter sports and cultural events.

  • Improve Medical facilities

By expanding its care of the employees will allow them to rely on the company in long term, like providing medical allowance, Insurance cover, and providing safety materials.

  • Encourage employee feedback

Actively seek feedback from employees and appoint HR personnel to maintain professional standards.

  • Offer competitive compensation

Company can make sure in competitive compensation with other companies in the area. Its not only with the salary also can consider providing other benefits like health fee gift vouchers, international tours.

  • Invest in Employee career growth

Providing opportunities for employees to develop their skills and advance in their careers. This could include helping them set career goals, providing professional development opportunities and promoting them fairly.

Conclusion:

Well skilled employees are the main asset of the organizations. They empowered the organizations growth, and as well the nations. Even though migrations can not set limitations but taking a right actions by the organizations and following these steps, might be helpful to  reduce migrations by organization's well skilled employees,  and focused on creating a better environment.
